i like reading gerry's words
and michel's
if it comes down to a platform
it needs to be one that does one thing:
enables real world collaboration
this may sound obvious
but this is what i mean:
the test for whether a platform is useful
is that it helps a small group of people achieve a socially manifest result
within the week
preferably an idealistic result unachievable by current means
i have seen discussion on platforms and collaborative social software
and it all remains at the level of improving communication
across the virtual plain…
this will go on endlessly unless we include a test that is non-virtual
that is
the true test is not based on what one thinks of the software
but on the evidence of its use in the real world
(you might think turing test as a parallel)
if this is the true test of the software
may i humbly suggest
1
it is not a platform we need
but a reflective surface
2
it's not about gathering around any movement etc
(which is just another guise for
"join our group")
nor take part in this project
(which is a legitimate call for help)
but we need to produce specific discrete events
the media-ecology post-modern production gathering last year in manchester
was good
though we didn't realise the true potential of such an event
it did happen over a few days…
we need to think about producing results in a few days
or at least within a week
so that when a collaborative system reflective software thing appears
we actually have the mental acuity and experiential skills to make use of it
[fabio: i think the worth of my contribution about 0.2 pence :]
