"Ownership" of the data is very important in the
Metacurrency context too. We have been talking
in terms of "unenclosable spaces", but it is the
same thing structurally. Everyone wants to be
"the" gatekeeper, and the essence of P2P is that
there is no gatekeeper and there can never be a
gatekeeper.
That is a great set of slides, Chris. This is
exactly the sort of currency design that
metacurrency is targeted for. Any party trying
to "own" the network or the data destroys the
whole thing. Communities and individuals need to
own their data so that no one can put in
artificial barriers and associated gatekeeper
tolls. Sure, there are service providers, but
they must compete on an equal basis with price
and service quality.
In our open rules and protocols, data integrity
and secure transactions are in a sense "local" to
the transactions. The parties and witnesses own
their copies of what went down and can entrust it
to any system or service provider that they
choose. MC defines the protocols so that any
participant has the same status and knowledge in
the interpretation and recording, but there still
is no global context. It may be that large
service providers are ubiquitous and
interconnected so that in effect there is a
single seemless global space, but still by choice
any group can isolate their own transaction
circles.
