Hi Melissa,
I understand your scepticism and share some of it. Not all though,
because I believe the announcement made on Monday was important and
indicates progress. There is a shift of focus happening here, a shift
both parties seem broadly behind and, therefore, a shift that will be
enacted in one shape or another regardless who wins the election.
The shift seems to fall along the opening up of much more government
data to outside scrutiny, aiming for universal access to superfast
broadband and – crucially – creating better mechanisms for individuals
to be more engaged with and have more control over the policy that
governs them.
As always happens, any progress will be halting and may seem
inadequate. Not all government data will be opened up, not everyone
will have access to superfast broadband and our ability to influence
policy will remain limited for some time yet. But I firmly believe
that what we’ll end up with will be better than what we’ve got now.
And it will lead on, with the right pushing, to something even better
later.
Dave
