Only the coders will be really interested in this, but I've created a
combined code review system and build/test system. It's based around
git and github and is intended to make life a lot simpler for open
source projects. Here are a few links:

* http://gitreview.com/activity?hide_slaves=1
* http://gitreview.com/commits/ampify?failures_only=1
* http://gitreview.com/profile/tav
* http://gitreview.com/build/6001
* http://gitreview.com/review/ampify/tav/gitreview-guide/1

In an ideal world it'd be super simple to contribute to an open source
project — and this is what I've tried to achieve with git-review.
Thanks to it, the process for a random coder to submit a patch can be
as simple as:

* Clone the repository and create a branch for the patch:

$ git checkout -b name-for-the-patch

* Commit the various changes to the local repository and then run:

$ git review submit

Tada!

Behind the scenes this does a bunch of things to help both the
contributor and the project maintainer(s):

* The branch is rebased on top of the latest upstream/master so that
the maintainer(s) can apply the patch as a fast-forward without having
to merge it. Contributors could use this opportunity to squash their
commits if they wanted to.

* The message for the submission is auto-generated from the commit
messages — the contributor is given a chance to edit it but doesn't
have to waste time explaining what their submission is about if
they've already written decent commit messages.

* Automated checks are run if `revhook` files are present in the
repository. These files contain python functions which are run for
matching files in the changeset, e.g. the following checker in
ampify's `revhook` runs `nodelint` on javascript files — helping
ensure code quality.

@checker(include=['*.js'])
def jslint(changelist, files):
"""JSLinting %s failed.nn"""

for filename in files:
stdout, stderr, retcode = run('nodelint', filename)
if retcode:
changelist.error(filename, stderr)

* The changes are submitted to the review-server specified in the
repository's `.gitreview/config.yaml` file where it can be reviewed by
others, e.g.

http://gitreview.com/review/ampify/tav/gitreview-guide/1

* Also, based on which files changed and the repository's
`.gitreview/watchlist.yaml` file, specific individuals are
automatically "cc'ed" for the review, so that as a contributor you
don't have to spend time worrying about contacting the appropriate
individual.

* The review will pop up the next time a cc'ed individual logs onto
the review-server. Here they can see what changed, add comments using
markdown (including in-line ones) and if the code isn't going to do
anything malicious, approve it as "safe to build" by one of the
git-slaves. Of course, if the submission is by one of the core
developers as specified on the repo page, e.g.
http://gitreview.com/repo/ampify all submissions by them are
automatically assumed to be safe to build.

* A machine running `git-slave` will then query the review-server and
generate a new build and run the build phases/tests as specified in
the repository's `.gitreview/config.yaml` before submitting the
results back to the review-server. Setting up new slaves is fairly
easy too:

* Clone the gitreview version of the repository, e.g.
http://github.com/gitreview/ampify
* Create a slave on the review-server, e.g. http://gitreview.com/slaves
* Get the project maintainer to approve your slave for the
particular project
* Set the slave id and token using `git config`
* Run `git slave run` inside the repo — or use `git slave start`
to run it as a daemon

* Failure in any of the build phases, as detected by exit codes, is
also accompanied by the full stdout/stderr streams so as to help debug
the problem, e.g.

http://gitreview.com/build/15001

* Based on the feedback and build results, a contributor can submit
further changes by just running `git review submit` again in the same
branch. This results in an incremented patch number for the review id,
e.g.

http://gitreview.com/review/ampify/tav/gitreview-guide/2

* And once the changes look good, one of the core developers for the
project can give a LGTM (looks good to me) comment which will mark the
review as approved. Alternatively, they can also reject it.

* Anyone can apply a review changeset at any time by simply running
`git review apply <review-id>`. The "review id" is composed of
<submitter's-github-username>/<patch-name>/<patch-number>, e.g.

$ git apply tav/gitreview-guide/2

* A project maintainer can also inform the review-server that a patch
has been applied to upstream/master by running apply with the

Hi All,

My colleague Pierre has been working on a web development process while
working at Collabforge, and has recently decided to take it 'open source'
with the company's blessing.

http://www.heraprocess.org/

=========
Why Hera It's unfortunately not uncommon in new IT companies to see a huge
lack of project management even though process solutions like Pince2 or
Agile exist among many others. According to the The Standish Group(external
link), 65% of the IT projects are over time or budget or fail! But learning
from those processes takes time as they aren't IT specific, are abstract and
don't give a 'ready to go' solution. Using them for small and medium
projects like website might be too much. The idea of Hera emerged from this
statement as an attempt of a very simple 'ready to go' framework for
processes.

=========

It's early stages for sure, but I think it's an excellent concept

Pierre's looking for:

– communities that would be interested in this
– firms that might want help implementing such a process

Anyone know of similar projects, or people working in a similar area?

Cheers,
Matt

Hey Folks.

This distinction nicely describes what I was working on (and will refocus on
in time) with the development of a systems approach to funding social
ventures (ecosystem pooled fund). It made it clear to me why many in the
social venture space had a hard time understanding what I was suggesting.

http://emergenttransformation.com/

In the forseeable future I`ll give everyone an update and try to kickstart
OK again…

Kevin Curry and others including myself are putting out the word to
gather interesting in a "CityCamp" world tour of unconferences at the
intersection of local Gov 2.0, transparency, and citizen
participation. The initial Chicago CityCamp attracted a dynamic mix of
people coming from e-government, social media, civic engagement,
digital inclusion, software development perspectives, etc. – a truly
cross-cutting, silo busting group of participants.

If you want a city in your country (there is some special interest in
developing countries) on the prospecting list, it is important to say
something now.

A great way to stand up and be counted is to join the main CityCamp
Exchange online group and post to this topic:

http://forums.e-democracy.org/r/topic/12suc5T4HMb4O4YR0Kga8d

Join the group from:

http://e-democracy.org/citycamp

You can also contact Kevin Curry directly: kmcurry@gmail.com – See
his note below.

E-Democracy.org will be doing all it can to support these important
convenings and continue to support the main online exchange among
participants. I encourage other organizations to step up and
contribute as well.

Steven Clift
E-Democracy.org

From: kevin curry <kmcurry@gmail.com>
Date: Mon, Jul 19, 2010 at 7:13 PM
Subject: [CityCamp Exchange] City Camp World Tour?
To: citycamp@forums.e-democracy.org

City Campers,

Over the past several months I've fielded many questions about when and
where the next City Camp will happen. City Camp
DC – http://barcamp.pbworks.com/CityCampDC – already happened. As a
result of those questions – and some convincing by a
handful of you – I've started thinking seriously about the answer(s).

In a nutshell, I'm thinking about a City Camp "world tour" starting in 2010
and continuing through 2011. I've been in contact with potential local
partners in Philadelphia, London, and Edmonton. Additionally, I've be asked
about feasibility of conducting City Camps in developing nations: Africa,
India, Indonesia. The Code for America cities make sense, too.

Ultimately it will take committed, local partners to determine where City
Camp World Tour (CCWT) will land. I'll need help finding facilities,
caterers, sponsors, and most importantly: local government participants.

So, I'm appealing to you all today for help finding those local partners.
Based on highly scientific research I'm most interested in these cities:

Boston
Boulder
Philly
Seattle
Washington, D.C.
Miami
Austin
Atlanta
New York
London, UK
Helsinki, Finland
Mumbai, India
Ahmedabad, India
Kigali, Rwanda
Nairobi, Kenya
Johannesburg, South Africa
Manila, Philippines
Bangkok, Thailand
Edmonton, Canada
Galway, Ireland
St. Petersburg, Russia
Auckland or Wellington, New Zealand
(Australia)
(Mexico)
(Central/South America?)

Here's a map view:
http://explorer.arcgis.com/?open=16fd2c7c307248aeb8cc11b62c8ccc74

But I'm open to working on a City Camp wherever I can find a local partner.
Please contact me directly ff you are interested in becoming a local
partner and are confident that you can handle the responsibility. Please
also share this with your other networks.

Thank You,
Kevin
